The market as a whole grew by 8%, but the Samsung Galaxy Watch suffered a massive loss of market share while Huawei recorded considerable growth.

According to the latest data from Counterpoint Research, a total of 9% more “HLOS” smartwatches were sold worldwide in the third quarter of 2023, i.e. between July and September, than in 2022. HLOS stands for “High Level Operating System” and refers to smartwatches with support for third-party apps. Simple fitness trackers or inexpensive, smart wristbands are not included.

Even though the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 received relatively few upgrades, Apple was able to maintain its position as market leader and, just like last year, claim a market share of 45%. The Apple Watch SE 2 is said to have contributed significantly to Apple’s best smartwatch quarter to date. Sales of the Samsung Galaxy Watch, on the other hand, have fallen by 19%, reducing Samsung’s market share from 24 to 18%. However, the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is reportedly extremely popular and has increased the average selling price of a Galaxy Watch.

Huawei is in third place with a market share of 14%. The Chinese tech giant shipped an impressive 122% more HLOS smartwatches in the third quarter of 2023 than in the same quarter last year, primarily thanks to the Huawei Watch 4, Watch 4 Pro and Watch GT 4. However, the majority of this growth is attributable to Huawei’s home market of China. The three top dogs from India, namely Fire-Boltt, boAt and Noise, have all recorded solid growth, but due to lack of international presence, they still do not have enough weighting to be among the global market leaders.
