Apple iPhone 15 series are up for sale. The 2023 edition of Apple iPhones – iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max – boasts of a range of new features. Some of these are first-ever in a smartphone. Here are nine features of iPhone 15 series that are not there in any other smartphone right now.
iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are first phones to feature Titanium frame
iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max come with a Titanium-aluminium hybrid body that claims to use the “industry-first thermo-mechanical process”. The phones feature Titanium bands with a new sub structure made using 100 percent recycled aluminium which makes them more durable and lighter.
New iPhones are only phones that can shoot in 24MP by default
Most phones with high-resolution sensors shoot pixel binned photos and the new iPhone 15 series is no different. However, most phones pixel bin photos to 12MP, while the new iPhones default is 24MP which transforms into a much higher resolution picture while retaining more details compared to 12MP photos.
iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max run on A17 Pro, world’s first chip made on 3nm process
Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are powered by A17 Pro, the industry’s first 3-nanometer chip”. This makes the new chip from the company the first chip to use the 3nm process. But that’s just one part, the updated chip brings the biggest GPU redesign in the history of Apple and it also brings faster performance and improved neural engine along with Ray Tracing support.
Combined OIS and autofocus is a first for any smartphone
Announcing the new 5X telephoto lens, Apple also introduced its new autofocus system — 3D sensor shift that combines both OIS and autofocus that moves in all three directions which is first for any smartphone. This, according to Apple, offers better image stabilisation performance with 10000 micro movements.
Customisable Action button
The idea of an extra button isn’t new. But, a customisable Action button is actually new which lets users assign the action of their choice to it and use the phone more conveniently. Users have the option to retain the mute switch functionality or choose to assign it as a camera shutter, voice recorder and a lot of other options.
iPhone 15 Pro models can shoot 4K60 in RAW
Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are the first two phones to support 4K60 video recording in ProRAW. This allows users to record smoother videos with more details and data for post processing.
5X telephoto is backed by a Tetra Prism lens structure which is new for smartphone industry
To accompany the 120mm focal length via the new 5x telephoto lens, Apple has created the Tetraprism design which combines the optical image stabilisation and autofocus 3D sensor-shift module. The Tetraprism bounces the image four times to offer a bright and detailed zoom shot.
‘Automatic portrait mode’ is another new feature
Apple introduced next-generation Portrait with iPhone 15 series. The updated Portrait mode on iPhones automatically captures depth data when it detects a person, animal, bird in the frame or when users tap on the subject to focus. This then allows users to apply portrait effects later using the Photos app and also lets them adjust the focus after the photo has been taken.
Qi 2 finally comes to smartphones and iPhone 15 series is first
Qi 2 wireless charging standards were announced earlier this year and iPhone 15 series is the first to bring it to smartphones. It is a new enhanced wireless charging standard that includes a Magnetic Power Profile for improved wireless charging.
