China set to test 1,000km/h ultra-high-speed maglev train

A Chinese research team has successfully completed the country’s first full-size superconducting test run for an ultra-high-speed magnetic levitation (maglev) train, which, once completed, will be capable of running at a whopping 1,000 kilometers per hour under ideal conditions.

Developed by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation Limited (CASIC), the maglev train aims to carry passengers and cargo at a speed of 1,000km/h or faster in a low-vacuum tube. It is expected to be used for commuting between mega city clusters in the future.

 

 

A superconducting maglev test line has been built in Datong City, north China’s Shanxi Province.

The train combines maglev technology with low vacuum technology to achieve ultra-high-speed operation. More experiments will be conducted to reach the maximum speed and to verify the entire system’s reliability. Previously, the research team conducted a test at 623km/h under non-vacuum conditions. The train is expected to be used for commuting between mega-city clusters in the future.

The experiment preliminarily verified the scientific rationality of the overall design, said Li Ping, a member of the project at CASIC, at a science popularization exhibition held in Beijing on Sunday.

Li said that more experiments will be conducted to reach the maximum speed and to verify the entire system’s reliability, adding that the research team has tested a 623km/h speed under non-vacuum conditions previously.

Further experiments will be carried out to ensure maximum speed and reliability of the entire system. Previously, the research team had tested a speed of 623km/h under non-vacuum conditions. Currently, China’s high-speed bullet trains operate at a maximum speed of 350km/h.
