Espressif Launches “Radio Co-Processor” ESP32-E22

The new SoC comes loaded with some utility-focused bits. Engineering samples are available right now.

Known for creating ESP32 microcontrollers that work for various purposes, Espressif Systems has become a trusted name in the tinkerer community. The ESP32 lineup is often the first choice for beginners getting into DIY computing projects.

Of course they are not limited to just that. Expressif also supplies industrial-grade SoCs, Modules, and DevKits for commercial deployments.

A recent announcement sees them adding a new SoC to their lineup.

Dubbed a Radio Co-Processor (RCP), the ESP32-E22 can handle wireless connectivity while a separate host processor runs application code. It is powered by a dual-core 500 MHz RISC-V processor that was developed by Espressif.

The chip supports tri-band Wi-Fi 6E across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz frequencies, and comes with dual-mode Bluetooth support for both Classic (BR/EDR) and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.4.

For external connectivity, there’s high-speed interfaces like SDIO 3.0 and PCIe 2.1, with Expressif claiming that it can efficiently handle wireless data transfer rates up to 2.4 Gbps using 1024-QAM modulation.

And, thanks to the RCP architecture, the ESP32-E22 processes the entire Wi-Fi and Bluetooth protocol stack internally for tasks like security, authentication, scanning, roaming, and Bluetooth host functions.

If you were wondering about its use case, well, it is said to be a good fit for smart home hubs, AR/VR accessories that need low-latency wireless performance, high-bandwidth streaming, wireless video links, and industrial automation.
